Still in the early stages, Xiaomi has shown off a demo of a product it’s planning to put on sale this year! It’s called Mi Air Charge technology, and it uses 144 micro-antennae to transfer energy to your phone via a narrow wave beam.
According to Xiaomi’s demo, you’ll be able to walk into a room and your phone will start charging, even if an object is in the way. Eventually, Xiaomi says the Air Charger could be used to charge multiple devices at once in the room the device is placed in. According to the company, remote charging technology can charge multiple devices simultaneously and will even recharge a smartphone that’s being used while walking around or even when something is blocking it. On the smartphone side, and drilling down to the technical details, Xiaomi has also developed a miniaturized antenna array with a built-in “beacon antenna” and “receiving antenna array”. Beacon antenna broadcasts position information with low power consumption. The receiving antenna array, composed of 144 antennas, converts the millimeter wave signal emitted by the charging pile into electric energy through the rectifier circuit, to turn the sci-fi charging experience into reality.
Xiaomi says the technology will also work with smartwatches and fitness bracelets. Another goal is to make “living rooms truly wireless,” with speakers, lamps, and smart home devices all being powered by the same remote system. Currently, the transmitter is as large as, perhaps, a living room side-table. The transmitter can provide a 5W charge wirelessly to a smartphone. The transmitter is said to have 5 phase-detection antennas that help it locate the position of a smartphone (or compatible device) in the room in milliseconds.
You might be skeptical about the prospects of this technology making it to market quickly until evidence suggests otherwise, but we suggest you remain optimistic that Xiaomi will deliver on their promise!
